Life can be riddled with stress.  Situations at work, difficult relationships, strained finances, the death of a loved one, challenging classes, and moving are just a few of the things that can add fuel to the flame of internal and external pressures.  Some of the effects of stress include headaches, fatigue, chest pain, anxiety, lack of motivation, depression, undereating or overeating (I think I tend toward overeating!) and substance abuse.  If left unchecked, any one of these things can cripple our lives. 

Because there will always be things that can potentially be a source of stress, learning how to deal with them is incredibly important.  The American Nurses Association designated 2017 as the “Year of the Healthy Nurse” and this week’s theme has been about finding balance in your mind, body and spirit.  Balance is such an important part of wellness, and remembering that when any one of these areas (mind, body, or spirit) suffers, it can negatively impact another.  With that in mind, here are some tips from the staff at the Mayo Clinic for dealing with stress in the hope of leading a balanced and purposeful life.

Don't feel like you have to figure it out on your own. Seek help and support from family and friends, whether you need someone to listen to you, help with child care or a ride to work when your car's in the shop.

Set aside time for yourself. Get a massage, soak in a bubble bath, dance, listen to music, or watch a comedy — whatever helps you relax.

Eat a healthy diet, exercise regularly and get enough sleep.

Make a conscious effort to spend less time in front of a screen — television, tablet, computer and phone — and more time relaxing.
