Q. What are the advantages of Portage courses over the classroom?
A. Portage offers competitive tuition and no need to purchase any additional materials, such as text books. The self-paced nature of our courses and the fact that you can start on any date are distinct advantages when a student is attempting to meet an upcoming deadline. The availability of no-cost, prompt access to a personal tutor makes it easy to handle problem areas.

Q. Do I need a textbook?
A. No textbooks are required for any Portage course. All text and video materials are provided to the student.

Q. When can I register for Portage courses?
A. Today! Among the greatest advantage to our courses is the ability of students to start when they want (rather than just in Jan, June or Sept) and complete at the pace they desire since each student works independently at a time of the day that they choose.

Q. When do I receive a reply to my registration?
A. Students enrolling in Portage Online College Courses may begin their courses immediately after making tuition payment using the web-based course delivery system. The students will have full access to the course material after an instructor has been assigned to them. This is typically done within one business day.

Q. How do I receive my Portage materials?
A. All Portage lesson modules and exams are completed by online distance learning methods. This makes it possible to complete all aspects of our courses at home allowing students to work on the courses at a time which is convenient to their schedule. The student is assigned to a personal instructor who is available by email and is also supported by our academic help line. A help line instructor is available to assist the student with any problems they encounter with the course material.

Q. How am I taught through the lesson modules?
A. The student reads a section of the lesson module (which contains already solved example problems) then is asked to do sample problems which require application of the material which they have read. The answers to the sample problems are then checked against the correct answers given in the module. If any answers to the sample problems are incorrect, the student should re-do the problems taking into account the correct answers. If the problem is still not understood, the student should consult their personal instructor or the help line for assistance.

Q. How do I get help with anything I don't understand?
A. Each student is assigned their own personal instructor who is available by site mail to explain material which is not understood by the student. Several courses have help file links within the lesson modules containing detailed explanations and extra sample problems. Students in algebra, biology, and chemistry courses have access to the Student Help Line, where they talk one-on-one with an instructor about any questions they have regarding those courses.

Q. What is the Portage grading scale?
A. The grading scale used in all Portage courses is as follows:
A: 89.5% - 100%
B: 79.5% - 89.4%
C: 69.5% - 79.4%
D: 59.5% - 69.4%
F: 0% - 59.4%

Q. How do the Portage labs work?
A. The video lab will require you to maintain a lab notebook while viewing lab work being done by an experienced scientist. You will then need to complete an exam based on each experiment. The video lab has been chosen because it assures that you get to experience a wide variety of experiments with successful results. The lab exams must be completed to certify that the student has completed a LAB science course. The lab exams will factor into the final grade for each student.

Q. Does Portage award financial aid?
A. Portage does not participate in the federal financial aid programs. We work to help our students by keeping our costs low. When taking the course through traditional schools, you may incur costs for registration fees, text books, lab fees, and technology fees. Portage does not have additional fees beyond the tuition. All written materials are included in the cost, and there are no text books to purchase.

Q. What is the refund policy?
A. Students enrolled in Portage Learning course(s) may withdraw with written notice to studentservices@portagelearning.com. Include the number and title of course(s) and a brief statement indicatingĀ the reason for withdrawal.

Tuition charges are refunded in accordance with the drop/add policy outlined below. Further, the tuition refund will be reduced by $50 per course for processing/administrative fees. After the drop/add period no further refunds are granted, although a student may still withdraw from an incomplete course.

A refund for a course will not be given if either of the following has occurred:

Thirty (30) calendar days or more have elapsed since the date of registration for the course or anything beyond module one (1) exam has been submitted.

Students should be aware that the date of registration is not the date a course was started; i.e., even if a course was not started and 30 days have elapsed since date of registration, no refund is granted.

Q. What is the process for arranging for Portage transcripts?
A. Transcripts may be requested through the online system. Official transcripts are sent via 1st Class US Mail at no cost to the student. For more details about transcripts copy and paste the URL below into your browser.

Q. What software is required for your site?
A. All software needed for the course is available free of charge from reliable corporations.

If you are taking a course that includes a laboratory component, you must be able to view video streaming over the internet. For this we recommend that students have access to high speed internet service. See the link below for full details:

Q. What is NursingABC?
A. As you work through your Portage course, you will likely encounter the name NursingABC within some documentation. NursingABC, Inc. is the organization which operates the Portage Learning platform that delivers the Portage Online College Courses. For more information about NursingABC, please visit:

Q. Which courses do I need to take?
A. Each school and programs within schools have differing requirements, and we advise all students to contact an advisor at the school(s) of their choosing to determine which courses their program requires of their applicants.

Q. How long do I have to finish the course?
A. Each Portage course must be completed within one calendar year of submitting the first module of the course. At the end of one year, if your course is not completed, you will be withdrawn from the class, and a withdrawn grade will be assigned and displayed on your transcript. In order to replace the withdrawn grade, you will have to register for the course again.

Q. How long will the course material be available to me after I finish?
A. You will continue to have access to your course for 60 days after the course grade is finalized.

Q. Is there a deadline for requesting transcripts after my course is complete?
A. You may request a transcript at any time after your course grade is finalized by accessing the transcript request form in your student dashboard.

Q. Will I receive a 1098-T for tax purposes?
A. Portage courses are offered as individual courses. Portage does not award a degree or certificate; therefore, according to the IRS, Portage Learning is not eligible to issue 1098-Ts for tuition paid. Please consult with a tax professional if you have further questions.

Q. Does Portage Learning offer a military discount?
A. Absolutely! We provide a 10% discount on all of our courses for active and retired military personnel. Please give us a call or send us an email to receive further instructions on how to apply for this discount.
